Point-and-click adventure games may not be as popular today as they once were, but there are still some developers that keep honoring the traditions. As crude and simple as they might appear to be nowadays, some of the games in the genre packed quite the punch using the primitive techniques they had to work with back when state-of-the-art graphics engine weren’t free for grabs on the Internet.
Simon the Sorcerer is one of the classics of the genre, right up there with Monkey Island and King’s Quest. Humor plays a big role in this game as well, since it is the force that drives the story and the main ingredient of every dialogue. However, the puzzles should not be underestimated either, because they can play tricks on you and sometimes even make it really difficult not to cheat a bit.
As far as the story is concerned, you obviously play the role of Simon, who’s not much of a sorcerer to begin with anyway. In fact, he’s just a teenage boy who finds himself thrown into a magical world filled with stuff tales are made of, and he must use the little sorcery he knows to get out of trouble. Plenty of wacky characters are part of the fun as well, all of which make for some very intriguing conversations along the way.
Simon is able to perform a variety of actions, each one of which is selectable from the interface. Hence, you can walk, use items, consume substances, move objects, or talk to people, as well as a few other such interactions. An inventory is also available, and it is used to store the items you happen to pick up along the way, or combine objects to obtain what you need.
Since the game was released more than two decades ago, the graphics are about as basic as to be expected. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean they do not look nice, especially since a lot of work went into portraying the dreamy environments you get to visit. Every dialogue is voice acted, which is pretty impressive for a game that packs a grand total of two megabytes of data.
In the end, Simon the Sorcerer is definitely something you have to try for yourself in order to properly appreciate, mostly because of the delicious humor it features. Not only that, but the puzzles are tough enough to give you a few minor headaches as well, in case you are looking for a challenge.
