Sign Motion is a minimalist 2D platformer that aims to challenge the way we think about street signs and the people that live in it.
Not all the platformers are about defeating armies of warriors or about saving the world. Sometimes it’s just about figuring out what’s happening with your life and why are just a stick figure trying to survive. It turns out that developers can make a game about pretty much anything, so why not something about street signs and how they are coming back to life.
Most 2D platformers are usually pretty difficult, and developers have made a badge out of this, especially in the past few years. Many studios are trying to bring back the old golden days of gaming with incredibly difficult platformers, usually rendered in a 16-bit style. Fortunately, some studios are still working on modern ones, so it’s nice balance between the two trends.
It not easy to say what’s the story behind Sign Motion. It seems to be about a small girl that’s thrown out of a street sigh after something some kind of accident. She ends up being free and no longer trapped inside a sign, so she starts to push forward in search for answers.
When developers make minimalist games, with just a contour for the story, the players are left to fill in the blanks, so maybe the story will be a little bit difficult. One thing is certain; the girl can only go forward, and it's your job to keep her alive.
Outside the sign the world is governed by laws, like inertia and gravity, so you’re going to have to be very careful at the environment around you, Pretty much anything will be trying to kill you, including sudden falls, cars, and all sorts of traps.
Sign Motion resembles Limbo just a little bit, but only around the edges. This is not a perfect game, and it has it flaws. The animations could be better, and the contact zones are not all that well defined. It becomes obvious when she has to cling to a ledge.
Overall these are small issues, and they don’t subtract a lot from the player’s experience with the game.
