Puzzle games are designed to be intriguing and thought-provoking, but they must make some kind of sense by the end, otherwise gamers feel cheated and disappointed. Hence, the story must lead somewhere and the puzzles must work toward something great, which is not that difficult as long as the designers have an overall image of the complete story in their head.
She Remembered Caterpillars is a pretty strange adventure game structured into separate puzzles and levels, in which your goal is to arrange a couple of colorful characters. This arrangement is not difficult in and by itself, but the way you are allowed to move is pretty interesting, so it takes a lot longer to reach the correct result and move on to the next stage.
Thus, the goal is to take red and blue characters and get them to some sort of white landing pads, from where they can take off and fly away. However, this only happens after every white pad is occupied, and the roads between the pads are full of challenges. In essence, the greatest threat is the fact that certain sections can only be crossed by red characters and vice-versa, which makes movement a lot tougher than it would normally be.
Sometimes it would appear like there’s no way out of a particular jam, but that’s when the game presents you with a very special gimmick: the ability to combine a red and a blue creature in order to obtain a purple one. This comes in handy most of the time, but the later levels make it seem like not even this solves very much, because the puzzles get tougher and tougher all the time.
Another thing that may impress you at the game is the visual presentation, because it certainly looks like nothing else out there, design-wise. The environments are weird, yet colorful and cozy, even if they end up frustrating you most of the time. The point & click interface can be a tad unresponsive sometimes, but those are issues that can be easily solved with a few updates after the full game is released.
All things considered, She Remembered Caterpillars is something you should try for yourself if you are a fan of puzzle games, because it’s quite intriguing and challenging. However, it will be interesting to see how the designers keep boredom from entering the equation after a handful of levels that feel and look so similar.
