A well-written character can save the entire story on its own in some cases, because people can concentrate on it and let some plot mistakes pass by unnoticed, as long as they are entertained. Sam and Max established themselves as a classic comedy duo in the video games industry, which means that the writers can get away with a few inconsistencies now, as long as the two detectives put on a good show for the audience.
Sam and Max 205: What's New Beelzebub is the conclusion to the second season and it basically continues the events that transpired until now, although you should obviously not expect it to make complete sense. There are little-to-no changes when it comes to gameplay and graphics, because the story itself is the only thing that’s new in every episode.
Hence, this time around the two gifted detectives wake up in a subway tunnel that leads straight to hell, where Beelzebub himself awaits with the final judgement. The reason they visit the fire pit is because their friend Bosco died an untimely death, which means that Sam and Max must do everything they can to reclaim his soul and bring him back to Earth where he belongs.
Naturally, the game follows the same formula when it comes to dialogue and the way the characters interact with each other. Dark humor and macabre jokes are the quintessential Sam and Max experience, even more so now that they deal with subjects like death, hell, and final judgement. There are slip ups and not all the lines have the desired effect, but taken as a whole, the game is solid in this regard.
Solving the puzzles may require a bit of tinkering and pondering, but the mechanics are as simple as ever. Hence, all you have to do is talk to other characters, collect items you find along the way, and combine them in order to obtain the right ingredients to advance. Some puzzles are a tad more obvious than others, but they are fun nonetheless and you should be able to enjoy all of them.
All things considered, Sam and Max 205: What's New Beelzebub is everything it needed to be in order to make the fans happy and properly end the second season in the series. It could have used a bit more ingenuity on the puzzles, but if you let yourself enjoy the ride, everything else fades in the background.
