The Sam & Max series is definitely one of the most well-known point-and-click adventures titles out there, since everyone knows about the two freelance police detectives with severe mental issues. The episodic nature of the franchise means that a new adventure is released on a regular basis, expanding on the story of the two pals and adding more characters.
Sam and Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead is a parody on most zombie flicks out there and it features a classic scenario involving vampires, zombies, and various other such creatures. Other than the new theme and a brand new plot to drive the action, the game is basically the same as the previous episodes in the season, especially when it comes to graphics and gameplay.
Speaking of which, the story starts with the two detectives being informed of an ongoing zombie infestation on a global scale. As it happens, the undead are coming out of a place called ‘The Zombie Factory,' which is definitely not surprising, come to think of it. Hence, everything evolves more or less in the usual Sam & Max style, until you manage to uncover the true villain behind this disaster.
In case you are not familiar with the series, then you should know that the game is all about dialog and trying to find the right items around the environment. After you manage to do that, you must combine them in order to come up with a solution to the puzzles ahead. Talking with other characters can also provide you with clues, as well as more than enough hilarious exchanges.
Technically, the game is the same as the rest of the episodes in the season, which is not a bad thing at all. The widescreen support is definitely nice, as are the improved character models and smoother animations. Not only that, but the voice acting is sublime as always and each character is unique, or sometimes even memorable.
In the end, Sam and Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead comes about as close to the original Sam & Max spirit as possible, so you should be able to enjoy it if you happen to be an old customer of the series. If not, you’d better do yourself a solid and get acquainted with the franchise, because it’s definitely worth the trouble.
