The whole purpose of multiplayer games is for people to have fun in groups, either by cooperating or by competing with each other. However, most games require a fair bit of experience and skill, which is why not everyone is able to enjoy Dota, Counter-Strike or League of Legends. Thankfully, there are simpler games out there as well, especially now since the indie market is bigger than ever.
SOS: Shout Of Survival is a multiplayer co-op game with a very basic idea at its core, yet it somehow manages to keep you engaged from the first few minutes of gameplay. In short, the goal is for two humans to find themselves on the map by shouting and following each other’s voices. At the same time, a team of monsters must work together to catch them before they meet.
You can play either the human or the monster, and the teams are made of two players each. Good cooperation is a must, but sometimes a bit of luck is needed as well. The biggest impediment is the very limited field of view, which means that you often stumble into dead ends that force you to go back. The maps are also quite tricky, which is part of the fun as well.
Although this is merely a demo, it would be nice to have more customization options, although that’s most likely planned for the full version. As of right now, there are a couple of maps you can play on, although they seem to be randomly chosen when the server is created and all you can do is vote for one or the other. On the other hand, this is a great way to avoid playing the same map over and over again.
As for the graphics, they are about as basic as you would expect, but they go great with the general mood of the game. It’s a bit of a bummer that you cannot see more of the landscape, and it would seem like everything looks more or less the same all over the maps. The sound effects are nothing special either, but at least they don’t hurt the experience too much.
Although SOS: Shout Of Survival is not the kind of game that keeps you glued to the monitor for hours on end, it can become a regular hobby for casual gamers, especially since you can play it with your friends. Hence, if you wish to support the developers, you can vote for the game on Steam Greenlight.
