Runespell: Overture is a card game that blends the history of an alternate Europe, poker rules, and a mysterious character named the Changeling.
What happens when you combine Norse mythology, European history in an alternate timeline, and fantasy? You get a card game with poker rules, of course, what else? In all seriousness, it’s interesting to see how the developers from Mystic Box have combined all of these elements into a single cohesive storyline and gameplay mechanic, without feeling that it’s wrong.
Using poker rules was probably the best idea since almost anyone is familiar with them. You don’t have to learn new rules, or some new mythology created just for this game. If you ever played poker, you’re going to have a much easier time picking up the concept behind Runespell: Overture. It doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy because other features complicate matters just a little bit.
The players take the role of the Changeling, a creature that’s born from a monster god that has no memory. He makes his way through the Northern parts of Europe in search of his past, during a massive winter storm.
The story behind Runespell: Overture is not all that important, but it’s a good delivery method for the gameplay. The learning curve is very well balanced and all of the initial matches serve the purpose of a tutorial. You can still lose them if you're not careful.
The concept is pretty simple. You make combinations of five cards, the available decks, which translate into attacks. The better the mix, the stronger the attack. Players also have access to certain cards, with various powers, and they can even use allies during battles.
Each player can make three different actions during each turn, and with so many options it’s difficult to keep track of everything that’s happening. It’s also possible to steal cards from the opponent’s deck, which is very helpful. On the other hand, you must also protect yourself against stealing, and the player must always pay attention to what the AI is doing.
Runespell: Overture is a fun and challenging card game, with interesting concepts and ideas.
