Flight simulators need to strike a balance between simulation and fun, depending on what they aim to portray when it comes to gameplay. While titles like Microsoft Flight Simulator want to provide the players with a very realistic simulation of what it takes to fly an actual plane, other games are devised with action in mind and you must be able to both keep an eye on the controls and fire a machine-gun in the mean time.
Rowan’s Battle of Britain is part of the latter category and it certainly manages to provide you with a lot of fun and entertainment, not to mention the large number of action-packed scenarios that have you playing as either the British RAF, or the German Luftwaffe. Flying the in-game aircraft is not very complicated, yet it still manages to be fun and exciting at the same time.
There isn’t much of a story going on behind the scenes, just a series of missions you must undertake and pass in order to move on further. Whether you must participate in intense dogfights, or just bomb some valuable ground objectives, the gameplay is always on point and the main goal is for you to have fun doing so. As previously mentioned, you can choose to play with both factions and fly every kind of plane there is.
Because you can join either side during a mission, you can also admire and pilot some of the most legendary airplanes constructed by both the German and the British engineers. The list is quite long and impressive, but it obviously includes the revered Mustang series and the Hurricane. Each one of them has different specifications and it handles differently up in the air.
Given the age of the game, you should definitely not expect anything great from the graphics engine, although the terrain is created from satellite photos and it can look almost convincing if you are at a high enough altitude. The plane models received a lot of care, but the polygon count is still rather small and you may not discern between certain models sometimes, depending on how experienced you are in the domain.
In the end, Rowan’s Battle of Britain encompasses all the right elements to make the experience fun and compelling, although it may be a bit difficult to enjoy it this day and age. There are a couple of remakes and mods you can try out, however, which aim to bring the game into the new-age generation and improve on its looks.
