Roll Playing Game

Roll Playing Game is one of the most misleading titles I’ve come across and it’s also very clever. It’s not an RPG, it’s a game where you play as a ball and you have to roll around in a maze that’s full of traps just to collect some yellow orbs.

Roll Playing Game kind of sends mixed signals when trying to figure out whether it’s good or bad with the scale slightly tipping in favor of the latter. There are tons of games that push the same mechanics, guide the ball through the maze without killing it or letting it fall off the board.

However, however (I needed two of those just to make a point), Roll Playing Game is different in a lot of ways. For example, it has a swell personality that is shaped by some pretty humorous gameplay hints, the game will make fun of you (just a bit) and it will actually trick you into thinking that it’s all about rolling the ball. There’s much more depth to it and keeping a sharp mind is necessary.

In Roll Playing Game you have to navigate a maze and collect yellow orbs while dodging a wide array of traps and things that can kill your ball. It’s a rhythm-based game so you need to study patterns and pace yourself before you wreck yourself.

Speaking of rhythm, Roll Playing Game features one heck of a good soundtrack and each time you pick up an orb a subtle note is played. It all sounds really good. In terms of atmosphere, this game is doing everything the right way, it’s inviting, relaxing.

One thing that’s not particularly exciting but really nice about Roll Playing Game is that it doesn't pressure you in any way. If you want to collect all the orbs in a level, that’s fine, if you don’t and just want to get to the finish, that’s fine too. I’m not sure if that is reverse psychology applied to a games but it somehow makes you want to end the level at 100% and managing that is not easy.
