RoboCop is a rather violent movie that portrays the fate of a police officer who gets shot a few times in the line of duty. Due to the fact that his wounds were too severe to fix and death was imminent, the doctors and the government decide that he is the best candidate for an experimental procedure, which would transform him into a cyborg and offer him incredible abilities.
RoboCop, the subject of this review, allows you to experience the life of Alex Murphy and take on the bad guys at the same time, using his super-human abilities to do so. Moreover, the game also tackles the cyborg-vs-cyborg dilemma, since the ultimate villain is another hybrid that goes by the name of MIND and seems to be behind every bad thing that happens in the city.
As far as the background story is concerned, not a lot of work went into making it very interesting or logical, especially since the plot involves way too many elements to effectively be tied together at the end. Hence, you get to fight everything from gangsters, drug dealers who have developed a powerful new synthetic drug and even another cyborg at the end, as previously mentioned.
Since you get to play from a first-person point of view, the developers made sure that you can at least pretend that you are in the body of RoboCop, by displaying a variety of statistics and helpful guidelines on the screen, as it was the case in the movie. Hence, your super perception skills always localize every enemy in front of you and even aids you in targeting them, thus making the gameplay a bit too easy at times.
However, things are not very exciting when it comes to the technical aspects, since the graphics are rather poor and the controls are very annoying most of the time, not to mention the unimpressive soundtrack. Hence, despite the fact that the game all but aims for you, you can still have a hard time playing through the levels, whether it's due to boredom, or the faded level design that does not make any kind of impression on you.
In the end, RoboCop is definitely not the type of game you want to dedicate a few hours of your life to, regardless of how much you enjoyed the movie. Although the universe had a lot of potential and many great things were possible, as it was the case with the old NES releases, this FPS fails to take advantage of any interesting features.
