3D platformers are nothing out of the ordinary, even if the genre became popular back in the 8-bit era. Hence, there are plenty of games that revolutionized the genre after the 2D was no longer enjoyable for the masses, and you can still enjoy some of those franchises even today. On the other hand, the standards rise with each passing year, so it’s difficult to receive any attention without trying to innovate a bit.
Rising Islands is a platformer in which you control a girl by the name of Hairo, whose job is to save the world from evil and maybe prevent it from being torn apart by the forces of darkness. The main gameplay gimmick is that you have to move quickly and precisely, otherwise you won’t be able to make the desired jump or navigate the thin line between life and death.
The story is of no real consequence most of the time, and it’s full of cliches anyway, but then again it doesn’t really matter as long as the gameplay is fun and exciting. Hence, your attention is going to be focused on the road ahead instead of the characters or the events that unfold. Granted, you can learn everything you need to know by paying attention to the environment and the cutscenes anyway.
The whole point is to move as quickly as possible, which means that you are always sprinting and jumping at the last minute. Hairo has the ability to switch between dimension as well, ability that allows you to pass through either red or blue obstacles. Naturally, it becomes important that you manage to switch between them as quickly as possible in order to navigate certain portions of the environment.
Other than that, you can also make use of classic platformer tropes such as wall walks and controlled falling. Thankfully, the game is optimized and refined, so you shouldn’t have trouble controlling the character exactly as you desire, especially since controllers are always supported. On top of that, the graphics are pretty neat as well, even if the visual style is a bit simple and casual in nature.
Although it has a few flaws and annoyances, Rising Islands comes out pretty clean on the other side, so you should definitely give it a go if you enjoy platformers. On the other hand, you shouldn’t expect anything too grand either, depending on how experienced you are in the genre.
