Piranha Bytes have a love-hate relationship with their fans, because they either manage to create something amazing and revolutionize the genre, like the first two Gothic games, or they disappoint incredibly hard when it comes to simple things, such as a mere expansion pack for Gothic 3. Hence, one must be wary whenever they release something, otherwise bad experiences can be had.

Kill titans and hunt down pirates

Risen 2: Dark Waters is the continuation to their new franchise and it takes quite the wild turn when it comes to theme and general setting. Hence, the action now involves mostly pirates and the sea, as well as various sea-specific monsters. Other than that, the gameplay is mostly the same, except for some pretty serious differences that might end up ruining the atmosphere for everyone.

As far as the story is concerned, you play an Inquisitor who is tasked with eliminating the Titans that have risen from the deep. Naturally, the main quest is never straightforward and there are plenty of boring hoops to jump through in order to inch closer to the real thing. Pirates stand in your way in the beginning, as well as slightly less dangerous creatures and the minimal amount of difficult situations.

Difficult combat mechanics and good graphics

The biggest letdown of the game is the fact that the combat system is extremely flawed and annoying. This is because each creature has certain attack patterns that cannot be broken or parried very often, which leaves you open to stunlocks when multiple enemies are involved. Hence, even the weakest creatures can put you down if you happen to get stuck between a perfectly-timed combo.

Thankfully, the rest of the game looks and feels amazing, especially when it comes to graphics. The environments received a lot of care from the designers and you can really get into the atmosphere of the world if you let yourself enjoy the landscapes. The same goes for the soundtrack and the general sound effects, which blend perfectly with everything else and they can make you forget about the mess of a combat system.

A decent game that suffers from a few flaws

To sum things up a bit, Risen 2: Dark Waters is not something you would stand in line to buy, and it might even be the kind of game that frustrates you to the point you start hitting things, but it can also be fun every once in a while. The combat system is indeed amazingly bad, but since this is Piranha Bytes we’re talking about, there was no other way it could have turned out in the end.
