Exploring distant worlds is still a far away dream for humankind, while the chances to find alien life out there are extremely slim. However, fantasy allows us to have a lot of fun on the subject, because people have created a large number of fictional worlds you can explore right now. Whether they are in movie form or interactive video games, it’s always exciting to find out more about something that’s out of this world.
Rhem 4: The Golden Fragments is a classic point-and-click adventure game with pre-rendered graphics and a hefty collection of ruthless puzzles that can keep you occupied for quite a long time. The game also continues the story from the first three episodes, so it may not make a lot of sense to you if you haven’t enjoyed the previous chapters first.
As far as the story is concerned, everything takes place in RHEM yet again, with the main character finding some kind of ancient transportation system. Since this would allow you to travel to the outside world and back home, it is of capital importance to find out exactly how it functions. Not only that, but you must also find the key that puts the system in motion, which is definitely easier said than done.
The puzzles are by far the most important part of the game, on the other hand, which is why they are quite tough to solve as well. In essence, this fascinating world is filled with interesting machinery and vehicles that can be activated, but doing so requires a lot of tinkering. Naturally, the solutions are usually pretty logical when you finally stumble into them, although not all the puzzles can be considered intuitive.
Since the game uses a pre-rendered graphics engine, you should not expect too much detail when it comes to animations and the like. In fact, there’s barely any movement to see throughout the story, which might get boring after a while. Even so, the story and the riddles should keep your mind occupied, or at least make the static backgrounds feel appear more interesting.
Rhem 4: The Golden Fragments is indeed a worthy continuation of the series, but it probably won’t appeal to those who are not big fans of the genre. Hence, the challenging puzzles and lack of user friendliness might make newbies feel unwelcome, to say the least.
