Driving a car is not a very difficult task, but there’s more to it than just moving the steering wheel or pushing the pedals. Being in traffic requires a lot of quick thinking and problem solving, not to mention fast reaction times and good spatial awareness. Obviously, no one has all of these skills in the beginning, but they usually come along if you keep at it for a while.

Retro Parking is a simulator that allows you to drive a car on very narrow and tricky courses, with the sole purpose of reaching the finish line without hitting anything in the process. There are no time limits or optional objectives, which means that you only need to concentrate on going as slowly as possible. In hindsight, the lack of a time limit can result in early onset boredom.

There’s only one car to choose from, but you can change its color in case you get bored of the default one. The car in question looks a lot like a VW Beetle, but it’s not referred to as such, which means that it should be fine. As for the tracks, they are actually quite challenging and diverse, although most of them resume to one tight corner that needs to be negotiated with care.

Thankfully, at least there’s a lot of them to play with, since the developer promises two hundred stages, all of them unique. Granted, some of them look and feel alike, at least in the demo, but there’s always a new challenge waiting for you. New mechanics are added every now and again, such as ramps, lifts or barriers that require you to wait a few seconds and synchronize your movements.

As for the graphics, they are not actually bad, but there’s not much to see. The top-down perspective is pretty effective when you consider your task, but you can also zoom in and get a better look in case you can’t appreciate distance very well. The textures used to decorate the levels are quite nice, but they get repetitive after a while anyway.

In the end, Retro Parking is obviously not an original idea, and it’s a shame that there’s no time limit or anything else to make the experience more exciting. However, you can still have some fun with it, at least if you enjoy a challenge.
