There are many stories about people who get kidnapped and locked in strange places, and they rarely end well. On the other hand, the gimmick is great in terms of movie plots or video games, especially if the writers manage to keep the audience in suspense for the whole time. It’s difficult to do so, however, mainly because the action takes place in cramped environments most of the time.

Remember, Remember is an intriguing visual novel with role-playing elements, in which you have to survive through a pretty chaotic experience and come to terms with a terrible secret. Although most of the game flows like a regular visual novel, there’s more to it than that, given the fact that there are many interactive sequences and even mini-games that break the monotony every now and again.

In short, the plot revolves around a group of very old friends who are about to graduate from community college together and maybe start a new life. However, they are kidnapped the day before the graduation and locked in a strange room, not to mention the fact that their memories are locked away as well. The purpose is for you to discover the dark secret one of your friends has been harboring for all these years, and you are free to leave when that is achieved.

As mentioned before, there more to the game than simple dialog and nice backgrounds, since you are faced with many puzzles and mini-games along the way. Don’t expect anything too great, however, but it’s nice to see some variety in the genre at long last. Your decisions also affect the plot a tiny bit, which is great if you like to re-play the game multiple times.

Speaking of which, the artwork is quite smooth and colorful, which helps a lot with the atmosphere. The sci-fi environments can be a tad too faded sometimes, not to mention unoriginal, but then again there are plenty of great scenes as well. It also helps that the soundtrack goes pretty nicely with the artwork, even if it gets repetitive after a while.

In the end, Remember, Remember does not really innovate in terms of storytelling or character development, but the action is engaging enough to keep you in suspense until the end. At least it’s a bit different from most of the visual novels out there when it comes to gameplay.
