Cemeteries are rarely regarded as pleasant places, given the fact that they are so closely associated with death. Hence, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many people believe them to be haunted by those who rest there, which is why cemeteries are generally avoided at night. Naturally, they make great settings for horror games, although at this point it’s too much of a cliche.
Redemption Cemetery: One Foot in the Grave is a horror adventure game with hidden object gameplay mechanics, in which you have to solve puzzles and deal with supernatural beings in an attempt to rescue your friend from danger. The whole point is to move from one location to the other as quickly as possible, which is achieved by solving riddles and collecting useful items along the way.
The story starts when a journalist reports to her boss about a cemetery where strange things are happening. You play the role of her boss, and as it turns out, the woman disappears in the said cemetery not long after relaying her discovery. Thus, your goal is to go in after her and deal with the evil forces that have kidnapped your friend and employee, while also solving the mystery regarding the cemetery.
Not many innovations in the gameplay department, on the other hand, which is not a bad thing if you are looking for something familiar. The interface and the mechanics are about as classic as they can get in the genre, and the way you progress through the game is the same as well. Hence, you have to move from scene to scene to examining objects, picking up helpful items and solving puzzles.
The graphics in Redemption Cemetery: One Foot in the Grave are surprisingly nice, even if there are no 3D environments to explore at will. The static artwork is gorgeous, on the other hand, especially since it helps a lot with the creepy atmosphere throughout the story. There is voice acting for every cutscene, and the sound effects are pretty well-chosen as well.
All things considered, Redemption Cemetery: One Foot in the Grave is a well-executed adventure game, especially if you are not too pretentious when it comes to the gameplay mechanics. Thus, the artwork is great, the puzzles are challenging, and the horror atmosphere is spot on as well.
