Trains are quite complicated machines, which require an equally complicated infrastructure in order to be as efficient and as fast as possible. Hence, the railroad must take into account a lot of parameters and details about each route it encompasses, so that the trains that run on it can always get from one point to another in the shortest time possible and without crossing paths with any other trains.
Railroad Lines gives you the opportunity to put your mind to work and see if you've got what it takes to run a railroad, along with all the trains that run on it. To start off with, the game features a variety of scenarios and maps that hold different objectives, each one of which requires you to score a certain number of points in order to unlock the next levels.
These objectives, although not very complicated in their nature, are not as easy to achieve as you might believe, since the trains themselves need to be carefully coordinated and looked after on a regular basis. Thus, you have to make sure the routes are effective and that everything runs smoothly, by regulating the runs and managing every portion of the track.
In the beginning, your have access to some very basic locomotives and carriages, which are only enough to get you started and transport some goods from one point to the other. As you progress, more and more options are unlocked, featuring more powerful engines and a lot of different wagons to carry the desired merchandise. Moreover, you also get to design your own trains and choose how to split the load between cars.
One thing that stands out at this game is the fact that the maps are not very big, although they do increase in size as you advance through the stages. On the other hand, their limited size means that a lot more detail went into the actual railroad, as well as the towns it runs through and the surrounding environment, not to mention the trains themselves.
Railroad Lines does not advertise itself as a complicated simulator, but rather as an easy game for those who want a bit of challenge, but not so much as to stress out over their decisions. Hence, anyone who's got a passion for trains can enjoy it, especially since it does not require too much gameplay time or effort.
