Games like King's Bounty, Heroes of Might and Magic, or Disciples have inspired countless spinoffs, most of which never managed to peak out of obscurity, regardless of whether they deserved it or not. Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer is one of these games and it certainly tried its best appeal to the players, but almost everything worked against it when it comes to marketing and public awareness.
The title is among the first games developed by Nival Interactive, who are well known for their exquisite strategy titles. Hence, many of the elements might feel very familiar, especially if you are aware of their later releases and you do not mind taking in a healthy dose of strategy that may or may not get you killed in-game a few dozen times before you are able to make any significant progress.
As far as the storyline and the lore is concerned, the main quest revolves around an army of undead creatures and the necromancers that raise them. Naturally, they aim to invade the land of the living and basically burn it to the ground once or twice, in order to get rid of the other races and establish a new undead kingdom on the surface, in order to enjoy the sun and the liberty, while also not having to reside in a locked crypt for centuries.
Nival made a name for themselves by creating rather unique titles, which also happens to be the case with the game at hand as well. Hence, while the game may feel and play as an RPG in the first few minutes, things quickly change when you find out that there are also some RTS gimmicks integrated into the gameplay, to make the fights a bit more intense and tactical.
Naturally, the blend works quite well most of the time, although the title lacks polishing and the experience that would later result in much better games, such as the Etherlords or the Blitzkrieg series. However, the graphics are quite decent and they should bring back a lot of good memories, as long as you manage to make it run properly on a new-age computer.
Rage of Mages 2: Necromancer is definitely worth of a try, if only to experience the fascinating world that was created to hold the story. The game can be very fun and tactical, with plenty of options at your disposal and many different weapons, creatures and powerful spells.
