Strategy games do not always have to involve tanks and infantry soldiers, because there are many more ways to put your tactical mind into practice. As such, while racing is not necessarily the first thing that comes into your mind when you think about strategy, you can certainly apply a variety of tactics there as well.
Qvadriga is a turn-based strategy game in which you get to be the master of your very own chariot racing team and compete in the events, while also trying your best to survive the races. In essence, it’s all about giving the right orders at the right time, while also avoiding to get trampled, or be involved in accidents that can end with the death of your driver. Not only that, but the opponents play dirty as well, so you really have to watch yourself.
The game comes with two different gameplay modes, depending on how you are the most comfortable. Hence, you can either go entirely turn-based and stop to give orders every couple of seconds or use the dynamic mode and give the commands on the fly. Hence, the game is quite flexible and versatile, since it can accommodate a broad range of players.
Gameplay-wise, it may take you a few minutes to get the idea behind the mechanics, but it’s by no means complicated. Thus, every time you are allowed to give out orders, a certain number of symbols appear next to the chariot. In the dynamic mode, you have a limited amount of time to choose your option, which makes things a bit more dramatic and fast-paced.
However, the tactical depth is still there, because every decision can cost you dearly. Avoiding the wrecks on the track, changing lanes to avoid a crash with the other racers, or simply slowing down to prevent the horses from acting out, all of these can have a tremendous impact on the race. Hence, as boring as it may look from to an outside observer, the actual gameplay is tons of fun.
Overall, Qvadriga proves to be quite difficult to explain with words, which is why you really need to give it a try in order to see for yourself. In essence, the strategy behind it should be attractive enough to the fans of the genre, but not so complicated as to make everyone else feel overwhelmed.
