Visual novels may not be everyone’s cup of tea, mainly due to the lack of hands-on action, but they can tell powerful stories and leave a mark on the players. However, since they lack interactivity and you spend most of your time reading dialog, the story must be intriguing and well-written, otherwise boredom sets in very quickly.
Queen At Arms Deluxe Edition tells the tale of a girl by the name of Marcus Cordale, although you have the option to change her first name if you wish to do so. After being rescued from a warzone and forced to live the rest of her life in disguise as a boy, she also has to endure the army service when another war breaks out. In fact, she manages to rise through the ranks over the course of the story and reach a leading position.
Your role is to guide her along, although not every event is left up to you. Certain situations can have different outcomes, on the other hand, depending on what you choose to do. In fact, you can even affect the result of a battle by choosing to do one thing instead of the other. A few of the characters may even survive the whole ordeal if you make the right decisions, otherwise you’ll end up with fewer friends by the end of the story.
Replayability is key in a visual novel, unless the plot is strong enough to make a lasting impression on you the first time around. However, it’s always fun to go through the adventure again and see what happens if you change your choices. Thankfully, Queen At Arms allows you to do that, since there are many turning points that affect how the plot evolves along the way.
All is well in the graphics department too, although it’s worth noting that the style can be a tad abstract from time to time. The artists did a good job on the characters and the backgrounds, on the other hand, even if the latter get a tad repetitive sometimes. The soundtrack goes very well with everything else, and you can really slip into the proper mood thanks to it.
In the end, while Queen At Arms Deluxe Edition may not have the sharpest artwork out there, you can tell that quite a bit of effort went into the story. Hence, if you are up for a bit of drama and a different kind of war tale, this should be on your list.
