Turn-based strategy games rely in your patience and love for tactics in order to get away with the insane amounts of dead time, which basically form a great deal of the actual gameplay. However, it only appears dead for an outside observer, because if you are the one playing the game, your mind is actually calculating and visualizing your next move and trying to anticipate your enemy's plans as well.

Pride of Nations takes things a step further and challenges you to always be thinking, not just before an important confrontation or in-between the turns. Hence, due to the astounding number of options and possibilities that are put at your disposal, every decision can go in a hundred other directions and your tactics must withstand the test of time, since every little mistake can have repercussions later into the game.

It must be noted that this is the type of strategy game that is basically unplayable before you go through the tutorial, regardless of whether you have toyed around with similar titles before. The sheer size of the map and the interface can prove to be way too much at a first glance, not to mention the various keyboard shortcuts that must be used to activate or deactivate important functions. Moreover, the tutorial itself is spread into multiple parts, covering everything from basic economy, to military strategy and the colonization of other nations around Earth.

There are, however, some problems with a map this big and the fact that so many things are happening at once: the load times are incredibly long. While it doesn't take too much for the map itself to load when you start a new game, the necessary calculations between turns require almost a full minute on basically any computer, due to optimization bugs and technological incompatibilities. While this does not exactly break the game in any way, since it just requires a bit more patience, it may discourage newcomers even more, if the user interface wasn't enough.

The graphics constitute yet another problem, even if the game looks marvelous and the map is incredibly detailed, or at least until you zoom in too much. On the other hand, zooming out and viewing a great portion of the map at the same time practically brings the game to stall, due to the massive number of calculations it must perform to keep up. It's a shame this happens, because a lot of work went into depicting the continents as they are in reality, but you cannot really admire them without getting annoyed pretty quickly.

In the end, Pride of Nations fails quite hard when it comes to certain aspects, but it gets many of them right as well, which is exactly what hardcore strategy fans were waiting for. Hence, if you can stomach the gruesome loading times and you do not mind being assaulted by tons of information at all times, this is definitely the game for you.
