Valve practically created a new genre with Portal, since there are hundreds of similar games now that use the same gameplay ideas and mechanics. However, while Valve managed to make the experience extremely addictive and pleasant, it was by no means perfect, which is why you should at least give a chance to indie productions that try to copy its success.
Portal Mortal is a 2D game in which the goal is the same as in the original Portal: to navigate challenging stages and get to the end using a portal gun. However, the fact that there are only two dimensions to move around in, the gameplay is a bit different than what you would expect and it may take a while to get used to it. After that, it should come naturally to see the way out of every situation.
Although Valve’s creation was mostly story-driven and that’s what most people remember about it, Portal Mortal is exactly the opposite and it’s all about the puzzles. There is a story running in the background, but it’s more of a theme. In short there are a few signs and symbols spread around the levels, which can be figured out toward the end if you pay enough attention.
One of the features that truly extends the game’s life by a lot is the fact that you are free to customize the stages as you want, and even create levels from scratch using the built-in editor. Thus, if you feel like one particular level is too easy or the other way around, you can modify it with a few simple clicks and continue to enjoy the experience unhindered.
Naturally, all of this freedom and customization means that the game is not exactly extraordinary when it comes to visual quality. Obviously, the 2D environments and characters may not be as striking, but it shouldn't hurt the experience that much either. In fact, the particle and blood effects are quite nicely made, so you can at least enjoy them if the low-resolution graphics don’t do it for you.
All things considered, Portal Mortal is not just a silly clone, because it truly allows the players to take matters into their own hands and customize the levels as they see fit. The gameplay is much tougher than in the original Portal, which is good news for those seeking a challenge.
