Pizza may awake a lot of memories into people, but most of them involve late nights and most probably copious amounts of alcohol. However, the food is certainly not associated with evil cults or supernatural apparitions, at least not as far as common knowledge goes. Hence, the game at hand at least features an original premise if nothing else.
Pizza Morgana: Episode 1 talks about a young girl by the name of Jackie, who one day decides to order a pizza to solve her food shortage problems. Since this is a video game and nothing is out of the question, she soon finds herself teleported into another dimension, one in which monsters are real and the pizza delivery business is actually an evil congregation of archwizards and supernatural abominations.
The game plays like a classic point-and-click adventure game, although it is a tad more simplified than you would expect from the genre. As such, you are not really free to interact with the environment most of the time, only to examine certain objects and use some of them to accomplish your mission. Other than that, it’s business as usual in the point-and-click universe.
There are some cutscenes playing in between the different acts of the game, which aim to explain and develop the story without too much fuss. These are presented in comic book fashion and they are hand drawn to make them appear more appealing, which they do. On the other hand, the puzzles are sometimes way too simple and you can do a speed run through the game without even realizing.
Speaking of visuals, the graphics engine is a so called ‘2.5D engine', so it’s not fully three-dimensional, nor completely flat either. In fact, the environments are static and in 2D, while the characters are in 3D and they can move around freely, although there’s not a lot of room to do so, unfortunately.
All things being equal, there are much better games than Pizza Morgana: Episode 1 out there, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t give it a try. The original setting and ludicrous plot might just prove to be what you were looking for, especially if you keep an open mind.
