Pirates as everyone imagines them today, usually with a parrot on their shoulder, a wooden leg, an eye patch, and the curious accent with an emphasis on the letter ‘r’ are actually a product of Hollywood and the way they were portrayed by some of the first actors who took on the roles. Video games based on the theme follow the pattern as well, so you’ll definitely see a lot of cliches if you happen to play one.
Pirates of the Caribbean Pinball is about as straightforward as it can be when it comes to pirates and pinball, because both concepts are presented in a very classical manner. Hence, the goal of the game is to score as many point as possible while keeping the ball on the table, with everything taking place on a quintessential pirate ship, featuring cannons, black flags, and treasure chests.
The table itself is not very big and it kind of lacks detail when it comes to the objects and the areas you can reach. There are some treasure chests that can be unlocked, a few bumpers for the ball to bounce between, and the minimal amount of special areas that can yield interesting rewards. Other than that, you basically have nothing special to hunt for, which makes the gameplay rather dull.
There is one special event that can be unlocked as you play along, which allows you to play a mini-game featuring a cannon and enemy pirate ships. As can probably guess, the goal is to destroy as many ships as you can and gather points, which is not at all difficult to do. After you figure out how to shoot the cannon balls accurately, the mini-game becomes quite boring and predictable.
When it comes to the visual quality, the table itself doesn’t look too bad, but there’s certainly nothing special about it either. The graphics are simple and unimpressive, with basic shaders and almost devoid of any kind of particle effects. There are some animations intended to inspire more life into the experience, but the dullness persists in spite of them.
All things being equal, Pirates of the Caribbean Pinball could have done a lot better with the theme, but it refused to do so. The table is quite barren, there are very few interesting special events, and the overall gameplay gets way too monotonous way too quickly.
