Most classic games have reverberations to this day, given the fact that modern productions borrow many of their ideas from them. However, developers are even releasing retro video games lately, which are designed to look and feel like those from two or three decades ago. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s a big enough audience out there to keep the trend alive.
Phantom Brave PC is a classic JRPG with basic graphics and an emphasis on story and gameplay, which allows you to focus on getting the most out of your characters and enjoying every battle. On top of that, the setting is unique as well, because there are no fantasy cliches like elves or orcs to worry about. However, not everything is as colorful as it seems at first.
The story revolves around two main characters, namely Ash and Marona. Marona is an orphan who earns a living by undertaking missions for various people, given the fact that she has the power to see spirits, which in this game are called phantoms. Ash is one of these phantoms, and the two of them team up for a quest that turns out to be bigger than they expected.
Naturally, there’s plenty of action to fill the time with in between the cutscenes, which translates to a lot of battle sequences. However, the combat is actually pretty fun and engaging, especially if you enjoy a more tactical approach. Hence, there are plenty of options when it comes to positioning, special abilities and item use, which allows you to experience something different with every fight.
According to the developers, there are dozens of hours of gameplay, so it’s only logical that the game world is big as well. On the other hand, the graphics are not exactly detailed, and each map is rather small and devoid of anything interesting most of the time. Even so, the universe feels unique and engaging, at least when you are not grinding repetitive encounters and things like that.
In the end, Phantom Brave PC doesn’t have a huge audience outside Japan and Korea, but it may just convince a few western gamers to give it a try. If nothing else, at least the story is intriguing, and there’s plenty of it to go around.
