Being an artist may sound like a glamorous life, given the fact that no one is asking you to work a fixed number of hours every day. However, it’s not really like that in most cases, because even artists have contracts and deadlines, especially when it comes to painters. Talent can make things a lot easier, but it’s still a lot of work even if you know exactly what to do and how to do it.
Paint it Back is a casual puzzle game for the artistically inclined, although even those that can barely hold a pencil should be able to have fun with it. In essence, your goal is to paint a couple of pictures using a simple set of guidelines, although the paintings are actually pixel art, so it’s a lot easier than it sounds. On the other hand, it can still be a lot of work, especially in the later stages of the game.
The story is pretty hilarious as well, because it starts with a ghost that visits an art gallery. Unfortunately, the characters in the paintings flee at the sight of the apparition, which is why you are recruited to help the original artist repair his collection. Over the course of the story, you get to advance to more and more complicated pictures, as long as you keep doing a good job.
Since you do not have the actual picture in front of your eyes, you’ll have to respect a different set of guidelines in order to finish the painting. As such, each row and column has a certain set of numbers displayed near them, which signify how many squares are to be filled. If more than one number appears near the same column or row, it means that there’s at least one blank space between the squares you have to fill.
As far as the visual quality is concerned, the graphics are rather cartoony, although the actual artwork is pretty interesting and engaging. The characters and the environments are not animated, but that shouldn’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things. In fact, the puzzles can keep you entirely concentrated on the artwork you have to finish, which means that you won’t have the time to look at anything else.
In the end, Paint it Back may not be the most complicated puzzle game out there, but it’s certainly pretty and enjoyable. Hence, if you have a sweet spot for art in general and you do not mind the slow gameplay, Paint it Back can keep you occupied for a very long time.
