Overload is a new six-degree-of-freedom shooter developed by Revival Productions and by the same developers that have made this genre a success.

If you’re old enough, then you might have heard about the Descent series. These were games launched back in the 90s, and they enjoyed quite a bit of success back in the day. From some reason, this genre never got any kind of interesting titles after Descent 3, in 1999, but now that’s about to change.

The developers from Revival Productions say that they are the same who worked on the original titles, and they built a new game named Overload. Since they don’t own the name or the IP, they are doing the next best thing, building a spiritual successor.

The developers have released a small Demo teaser for Overload, with just a couple of missions and a tutorial, so that everyone can see what this is about. It’s basically the same game as Descent, but with modern graphics and an updated gameplay.

Overload is built on Unity, but with the exception of the settings menu that pops up at the beginning, it hard to tell that’s the case. The game looks great, it has amazing particle effects and an excellent physics engine.

The game is far from complete, but at the same time, it’s the only one of the two six-degree-of-freedom shooters that’s been made right now. You might also wonder what is this six-degree-of-freedom thing?

You pilot a ship that can move in all directions, pretty much like it happens with space shooters. The big difference is that it all happens underground, in cramped areas. It’s really old school, with munitions and weapons floating in the air, and a real arcade feeling.

The developers are saying that the demo is still just work in progress, but it work great, and it already looks pretty good. The developers probably still need to refine some aspects, like the level design and enemies, but if we take a closer look at the demo, we’ll see that they don’t have a lot of major work left to be done.

Just download and extract the archive to play. No installation is necessary, and Overload works just fine with a mouse.
