Overfall

“This is adorable!”, was my initial reaction to the wonderful cartoon inspired graphics. “Nice!”, says me to the smooth animations and all the bits and pieces of design. When it was time to for combat, things shot up to “this is simply excellent!”.

Overfall is a roleplaying game with a fantasy setting, procedural world generation, turn-based combat and great cartoon-style graphics. It looks so cute you’d think it’s a kiddie game, but it’s not.

Overfall is currently in development, and this is a pre-alpha demo and by George it’s good. Leaving aside the fact that some of the audio effects are absent, and the story is kind of thrown in there, what you can experience alongside Overfall is great.

Right now I can’t say enough about how good the combat implementation is in this game. For each combatant, you get three phases, ‘movement’, ‘misc’ and, ‘attack’, and for each of those you get two or three options, each tailored to the special skills and attributes of the character you select.

As far as games with turn-based combat go, this one is truly refreshing as it does add several layers to how you manage skills and see defensive and offensive actions.

Overfall looks great with its hand-drawn fantasy world and fighting grounds. The characters you get to control and the enemies you will fight, all have great designs and seem to radiate a certain personality or trait of theirs.

It’s certainly pleasant to see a combination of cartoonish design with rock-solid combat mechanics. Overfall seems to offer the best of both worlds, good aesthetics and captivating gameplay.

There are some essential things missing from the game but keep in mind that this is a pre-alpha demo that’s meant to showcase the core aspects of the game. And even so, with just combat, pieces of the storyline and map exploration, Overfall sets itself well above several other games that touch on the features it has.
