Genre combinations can sometimes yield fantastic results, regardless of whether we’re talking about video games, music, or anything similar. However, the mixture must be done properly, otherwise you end up with the worst of the two worlds. There are certain genres that blend easier than others, which makes it simpler to merge the mechanics as well.

Outpost - Save Yourselves is a roguelike game with strategy elements added for flavor as well, so the experience should feel pretty original. In essence, your purpose is to manage an outpost in the middle of a frozen landscape and survive the hordes of zombies that make their appearance at night. The game is not very alert, but you still have to keep an eye on many things at once, which makes it fast-paced in some regards.

You start off with a handful of engineers and a soldier in your team, with the simple task of repairing and investigating an arctic outpost. After you manage to repair the damage and get the place running again, night falls and you are under attack by what appear to be zombies. Naturally, the rescue attempt fails and you have to keep on surviving until a second team is sent to get you out of trouble.

The engineers are the ones that allow you to repair objects, gather resources from nearby warehouses and maintain the power generator. The latter also produces electricity for all the equipment and it keeps the outpost warm, so it is quite important to get it up and running as quickly as possible. Naturally, your units need food and warmth in order to survive, otherwise they succumb to the elements.

Your soldier is much more effective when it comes to combat, because he’s equipped with a powerful gun and you can directly control him using the classic WASD keys. However, he is not capable of carrying resources or doing anything else, so you must keep the engineers alive at all costs. As a whole, the gameplay is not exactly bad, but it’s poorly designed and there are many inconsistencies to ruin the experience.

In the end, Outpost - Save Yourselves has some neat ideas at its core, but the developers did not put them into practice very well. Hence, there are many bugs and inconveniences that make it difficult to enjoy the adventure, even if you are a huge fan of the roguelike genre.
