Successful movies usually take another stab at glory with a video game adaptation as well, in order to squeeze a little more money and get the most out of the product, profit-wise. In the case of an animated motion picture, this transition is even quicker and much more predictable, while the targets are the children who would like nothing more than to play as their favorite characters.
Open Season is an animated movie that tells the story of a group of animals which are about to be regarded as prey when the hunting season commences. Naturally, they fight to stay alive and they have a sense of humor about it, since they avoid hurting the hunters too badly, while also teaching them a lesson about the importance of fauna and its equilibrium with the world around them.
In essence, the game itself follows the events from the movie in most regards, although there are some unique scenes that were not featured on the silver screen as well. Gameplay-wise, the mechanics depend on what kind of scene you are re-enacting, since every mini-game and each challenge requires you to do something else. Nothing is too complicated, on the other hand, which means that even small children should be able to tackle the game.
While the controls are pretty good and they won’t cause too much anguish over the course of the career, it must be mentioned that the camera might act out every once in a while. Since some mini-games have platforming elements as well, bad camera angles can be responsible for a few failures and fits of anger. Fortunately, this only happens a few times and it should not be too severe anyway.
Visually, the same graphic style is used in the game as well, with nicely animated characters and funky environments. There are plenty of special effects decorating the scenes as well, not to mention the small details that hint to events from the movie. However, the voice actors are not the same it may rather obvious in some cases, although the ones hired to do the job are pretty good as well.
All things considered, Open Season should please the kids and anyone who wanted to see more of the wacky forest dwellers. The casual mechanics and the unimpressive gameplay is definitely not going to attract any serious gamers, though, but that was not the point of the release anyway.
