Octopus City Blues is one of those games that’s built to have tons of meaning and takes each bit of the plot to new areas of storytelling. Just knowing that the action takes place in a city that’s built around a giant octopus is enough to get you interested, and a quick peek at the graphics and design should convince you that Octopus City Blues is worth playing.
Octopus City Blues is all about the experience, the narrative kind because you don’t get to shoot aliens or stuff like that. The gameplay is mostly about wondering through the streets, markets, and alleys of Octopus City, interacting with NPCs, and obtaining as much information as you can.
The main character, Kaf Kafkaryan is a bit of a wimp in the sense that he’s actually a weakling with not a lot of character or fight in his spirit. All the more reasons for why his journey is that much more overwhelming. His mind is clouded by strange dreams, he finds himself in a war, and there are plenty of other events that push him to new experiences.
After a fist gander, Octopus City Blues might seem like a point and click but it’s not, even though the gameplay is almost identical to that of the latter. It relies heavily on collecting items and interacting with other characters and objects.
What’s great about Octopus City Blues is that each NPC is truly unique and with a specific role in the game. As such, your conversations with any of them can take multiple paths and depend on the questions you ask, the game shifts its structure. This means that you can play Octopus City Blues several times, make different choices when chatting and the game’s story will develop in a different way. Moreover, the environment suffers changes as well.
There is a lot of depth to Octopus City Blues to discover, and each tiny piece of it is interesting and adds to a world that’s captivating in all its strangeness.
The pace to Octopus City Blues isn’t all that captivating but if you enjoy games with interesting stories and very interesting characters this one is worth having. It’s probably going to be one of the most immersive games you’ve played.
