Trading card games are not particularly friendly with beginners because they usually require the players to be familiar with the rules from the get-go, or at least know the basics. Hence, newbies have it rough at first until they manage to scrape a bit of knowledge on the subject, which is why the genre lacks the mainstream popularity of first-person shooters or platformers.
Northmark: Hour of the Wolf attempts to get everyone interested in trading cards, regardless of any previous experience with them. To achieve that, the developers have integrated the mechanics into a role-playing package, to make it easier for beginners to start an adventure. As such, you pick up everything you need to know along the way, without having to study the rules or read extensive walkthroughs.
As the name clearly suggests, the action takes place in a realm called Northmark, a classic fantasy setting featuring the usual dwarves, elves and undead monsters. Your role is to choose whether you want to play as a mage, a druid or a warrior and try to protect the kingdom from evil. In doing so, you might also find out the secret between a stranger who’s known as The Wolf.
The game may lack polishing in multiple areas, but the combat aspect is quite fun and the trading cards are integrated nicely into the overall picture. As such, your main objective is to either find or buy these cards and make use of their powers in battle against various enemies. Naturally, a well-built deck can make the difference between a loss and a victory in some cases, but the system is not too complicated either.
In fact, you can just aim for the most expensive cards and let them do all the work for you instead, a strategy that would never work in a more authentic trading card game. Thankfully, the game makes it clear that it’s oriented toward a more casual portion of the audience, so simplicity is to be expected. On top of that, the graphics are very pleasant and mostly hand-drawn, so that’s definitely a plus.
While Northmark: Hour of the Wolf may not make the veterans of the genre happy in any way, it can certainly open new paths for those who are just starting out and need a good place to begin. Hence, if you have toyed with the idea but you have found the established games too intimidating, this can help a great deal with that.
