Ninjas are definitely one of the most popular video game characters when it comes to action games, especially if they feature anime influences or they take place in that part of the world. However, ninjas are rarely pictured as they actually were, since the real ninjas were a far cry from the honorable warriors seen in movies and video games. Instead, they were mostly spies and assassins that used every dirty trick in the book to accomplish their missions.
Ninja Avenger Dragon Blade is a third-person action game with hack and slash mechanics and basic graphics, in which your only goal is to complete repetitive quests and try not to die along the way. There is nothing new or exciting in the gameplay department, and the story leaves much to be desired as well, but you just might get a few minutes of fun out of the game if you have nothing else to play. Although you are technically playing on open maps and you have the freedom to go anywhere you want, these maps are incredibly small and restrictive, usually featuring a plethora of invisible walls and obstacles to prevent you from straying too far. The missions actually ask you to “Go kill 8 bandits*, which kills the mood and makes the whole thing feel like a parody instead.
The combat is basically as simple as it gets, given the fact that all you have to do is keep clicking in the general direction of the enemies. Sometimes the attacks are not registered and you get hit either way, while other times you can just spam the ranged spell and keep your opponents stun locked. Everything feels unrefined and awkward, even the movement, so it’s difficult to stay excited about the game. To make things even worse, there are many bugs and glitches that interfere with your ability to have fun, especially when your character is shot straight up into the air for some reason, or the many instances when your attacks are not registered. The graphics are very basic and disappointing for this day and age as well, but this wouldn’t matter as much if the rest of the game was worth the effort.
Ninja Avenger Dragon Blade feels like the developers tried to get it on the market as quickly as possible with total disregard for quality. Hence, everything about it is flawed and annoying, including the combat system, the level design, the story and the graphics.
