The Super Mario Bros. franchise probably enjoyed more remakes, reboots, and fan-made projects than anything else out there, mostly because it truly is one of the representative series of the video games industry. However, not all of these reiterations are worth bothering with, because some of them are quite bad and they can only annoy you, if anything.
New Super Mario Bros Bowsers Revenge is a fan-made game in which the story continues after Mario manages to defeat Bowser. As it happens, Bowser’s minions find a new way to make him almost invincible, which should make it that much easier to dispatch with the annoying plumber. Naturally, he starts terrorizing the village again, in order to bait Mario to him once more.
After the crude and simple intro cutscene, which is basically a series of dialog boxes loosely informing you about the plot, you get to see the world map and guide Mario to the first area. However, this map is very sketchy and badly implemented, not to mention the fact that there are no guidelines on what is what, or how to interact with the environment. Once you figure it out, the first level starts and things don’t get any better.
At a glance, the game comes about as close to the original release as possible, albeit the graphics are slightly improved. Once you touch the keyboard and start moving around, on the other hand, you realize that everything is unpolished and badly programmed, because it is a real pain to jump from platform to platform without slipping, falling through objects, or simply disappearing into nothing out of the blue.
The amount of bugs you have to deal with is staggering at times, especially when it comes to Mario’s interaction with the environment. Moreover, there’s a hit point bar that keeps track of the damage you take, but it almost never works correctly. The enemies are mostly broken and they interact poorly with the environment, if they even react to something, that is.
When it’s all said and done, there’s no way to tell whether New Super Mario Bros Bowsers Revenge could have been a good game, because almost no effort went into it whatsoever. The levels are basic and lacking in detail, the AI of the enemies is terrible, the controls are horrendous, and the story disappears after the first five seconds of gameplay.
