Whenever magic and wizards enter the mix, the action usually takes place in some kind of fantasy world full of orcs, elves and other nasty creatures. However, it’s nice to see a deviation from this concept every now and again, because it allows the writers to get really creative with the idea of magic. Hence, wizards in a modern environment can deal a lot of damage if they unleash their powers.
Neighbourhood Necromancer is a text-based adventure game in which you play the role of a young boy/girl who discovers the fact that he has the power to raise the dead from the ground and use them for his own personal gain. Since everything is left up to you in terms of story and plot progression, what the main character does with these powers depends on how you approach each situation.
There’s an overall idea that glues the action together, and it regards a powerful military complex that threatens to destroy the whole city. You can choose whether to do the same or save your town using various undead creatures, so multiple playthroughs are a must. It’s also possible to be a girl and choose the desired sexual orientation, so there’s a lot of variety along the way.
The thing that makes Neighbourhood Necromancer so exciting is that every little event can be handled in a variety of ways, and it’s very fun to raise zombies from the grave just to deal with a barber that didn’t do his job properly. Bullies can be handled with grace or with brute force, and there are many other such situations that make it a real delight to make use of your special powers.
As mentioned before, multiple playthroughs are recommended to get the most out of the game, especially since you can witness entirely new events just by making other decisions. Unfortunately, all of these great scenes must take place in your head, since there are no graphics and no soundtrack to talk about. On the other hand, this is how the genre draws you in, since text-based games are quite addictive if you enjoy reading.
When it’s all said and done, Neighbourhood Necromancer should put a smile on your face and provide you with a great time in terms of storytelling and role-playing elements. The experience remains exciting even if you go back a couple more times after the first playthrough.
