As far as game stories are concerned, it can be pretty difficult to come up with an original idea this day and age, especially when countless titles are released every day and many more are in development. However, imagination knows no limits and there is always something new you can think of that would work great in a video game, especially if it involves monsters, war or demons.

NecroVision certainly tried very hard to come up with something, but there is also the problem of trying too hard, since you can sometimes go overboard and lose sight of what’s actually important. In essence, the central idea revolves around the first World War, but things get out of control in the span of about five minutes, as zombies, ghosts, demons and vampires make an appearance to drive the plot forward.

Hence, the game starts off with a cinematic in which the main character is sort of introduced as being an American soldier fighting for the British army during the first World War. The action begins in a bunker and you have to make your way out of the fortress, but as soon as you step outside, you are attacked by hordes of zombies. Later on, it turns out that the main storyline actually involves an ancient war between demons and vampires, although dragons, wizards and ghosts are also part of the equation, somehow.

When it comes to actually playing the game, you might be surprised at how natural it all comes, whether it’s shooting zombies in the head or avoiding the ectoplasm blasts from an ethereal spirit. Sure, it doesn’t make any kind of sense at any point, but the fun factor is there and you can definitely forget yourself for the duration of the main campaign, which isn’t that long anyway. After all, it is not every day that you get to fight Nazis and dragons at the same time.

Visually, the game outdid itself in some regards but failed in others, which overall adds up to a mediocre presentation. The graphics engine is good and it supports plenty of new-age effects, including DX10, motion blur, HDR and such, but the level design is very linear and not very colorful. Brown is prevalent and it kind of makes everything appear repetitive and boring, even if the levels themselves are quite varied, most of the time.

In the end NecroVision seems to have achieved its goal, whatever it might have been. If fun is all that matters to you in a video game, then this is definitely your best bet, especially if you do not mind the crazy plot, the high difficulty and the annoying linearity.
