Monster RPG 2 Demo

JRPGs got famous in the western culture when the Final Fantasy franchise hit the markets, because it featured an entirely different style than the classic RPGs developed here. Since then, many other titles made it as well, while westerners started copying the style. Nowadays, the Internet is full of 16-bit JRPGs made with simple game creation tools, few of which are actually worth anyone’s time.

Monster RPG 2 is actually a bit more refined than your average indie release, although it still sports the usual retro look and most of the same mechanics when it comes to exploration and combat. Hence, you can use the mouse or the keyboard to move around on the map in real-time, while the battle sequences are negotiated in a turn-based manner.

As far as the story is concerned, it all starts with a girl called Eny, who turns out to be more than just a simple peasant after all. In essence, by overcoming a variety of dangerous situations and traps, she teams up with other characters and together they try to make the world a better place. Naturally, the entire realm is saved by the girl and her friends in the end, as luck has it.

Gameplay-wise, it only takes a few minutes to familiarize yourself with all the controls and the interface in general. Everything is intuitive and easy-to-use, which makes the rest of the experience that much more comfortable to enjoy. Hence, all you need to do in order to explore the environment is to either click around or use the keyboard, with both of the options being nicely implemented.

The visuals are not exactly cutting edge, but they are pretty enough to bring back some memories for those who were around to see such games being released by the giants of the industry. Moreover, the same can be said about the music, which is nice enough to maintain the atmosphere, yet not too invasive to distract you from the gameplay.

All things being equal, Monster RPG 2 is not exactly a jewel when it comes to story or gameplay, so not everyone is going to appreciate its value. However, if you are up for a nice JRPG with retro graphics and just enough intrigue to get you hooked, this may very well be the answer.
