Sometimes, a nice atmosphere can be enough to make a bad game feel mediocre, as long as the player is entertained and distracted by the scenery. However, boredom quickly sets in without a proper set of gameplay mechanics, or at least an engaging story to keep the audience interested in the game, despite its glaring flaws.
Monster Challenge Circus makes is pretty difficult not to feel a bit uneasy every now and again, given its particular brand of visual design and the unusual theme approached by the game. Hence, you are constantly either eviscerating some sort of hellish creature or consuming its remains afterward to regain your strength, so you really need to have a strong stomach.
The story talks about a powerful demon by the name of Dehon, who is also the Great Disciple of the Caste of the 40,000 Moons. Whatever that may represent, it is quite clear that the writers tried a bit too hard to make everything appear evil. In essence, the actual story is not as complicated as all the fancy names might make it appear, because all you need to do is defeat a great evil at the end of the campaign.
Unfortunately, the game is almost unplayable when it comes to user interface and the actual gameplay. While the idea behind the spells and the level design is quite nice and appealing, you need a lot of patience and nerves of steel to properly use the interface. The same thing can be said about the camera, which is atrocious and almost unusable, made even worse by the dark environments with nothing to guide you.
Speaking of which, the game’s visuals are the only positive thing about it, because they manage to create a thick layer of darkness and unease. However, you must be in the right mood to notice it, because it probably doesn’t work every time. The actual graphic quality is sub par and you may even notice that the darkness is sometimes used to cover up imperfections, as does the grain.
All things considered, Monster Challenge Circus doesn’t manage to impress in any way and it even makes it incredibly difficult for you to properly enjoy it. Thus, there are very few reasons to give this a try, especially since it causes more anguish in your life than pictured in the hellish environments from the actual game.
