Momentum

If you have a smartphone, you’ve certainly tried one of those games where you had to tilt your phone in all directions to get a metal ball from point A to point B while avoiding various obstacles. At its core, Momentum is similar to those games but x1000 the difficulty and looks.

The goal in Momentum is to successfully navigate a spherical object from one point to another along a floating track/maze. It sounds simple enough but it’s quite the opposite because the track is in 3D and you will constantly and quickly have to change camera perspective to keep track of where the ball is and where it’s going.

Momentum starts off innocent enough with some simple levels so you can get a feel of the mechanics and ball behaviour under the in-game physics. Then you reach level 3 and things start to get serious. Tracks not only become increasingly elaborate, but you constantly face new situations, as they bend and twist at ridiculous angles, some sections no longer have helpful railing, platforms become smaller and so on.

At some point, frustration can take over because the ball seems to speed up uncontrollably and just roll off the track when actually physics are spot and can’t really be blamed. It’s all about the controls. You get to use the classic W,A,S,D keys to manipulate the floating track and you can also use the mouse to change perspective for the same effect but you have to get used to their sensitivity, or adjust it.

Once you get a handle on them, things should run much smoother, but just by a bit. Now don’t get this the wrong way, Momentum is not an impossible game. Its difficulty is actually one of the several things which deserve appreciation. That along with great graphics, wonderful world ambiance and a soundtrack that seems to be perfect for anger management sessions, it really helps you keep calm.

On a closing note, Momentum is a game you simply have to try. It’s a game that pushes new ideas forward and delivers them in a good looking and fun package.
