Momento Temporis: Light from the Deep is a retro platformer in which you play the role of a woman by the name of Hania, who finds herself in the middle of a terrible and unknown place. The game is designed to come as close to old-school classics, which is why it borrows elements from a variety of well-known hits, including Castlevania and a few others from that period.

As such, your goal is to find a way to survive and explore at the same time, while also avoiding traps and fighting enemies. The exploration is not linear like in most platformers, on the other hand, since you can go back whenever you want, as well as decide whether to descend deeper into a cave or try to get as high up as possible. On the other hand, you shouldn’t expect anything too glorious either.

Your character has the ability to punch or kick enemies, as well as cast special skills every now and and again. In fact, the combat can be quite exciting and challenging, especially since it’s also possible to dash, dodge and even block attacks. Granted, it’s a very simplified version of how a great combat system should be like, but it’s more than enough for a platformer such as this one.

As for the graphics, the retro style is perfect for the game, especially since it has a few modern hints as well. The backgrounds can get repetitive after a while, but the layout is constantly changing, not to mention the fact that the whole landscape evolves as you are advancing through the game world. The game is still in early access, on the other hand, so it could get much better in the future.

In the end, Momento Temporis: Light from the Deep may not be able to impress too many young gamers, but it should appeal to those who don’t care about graphics that much. The gameplay is very balanced and addictive, just like it should be in an action-platformer.
