Simple platformers can be all you need sometimes, because they are challenging enough to keep you interested, yet not overly complicated to require a lot of thought and reason. However, not all of them are worthy of your time, especially if the gameplay mechanics are not smooth enough to make the experience pleasant and relaxing.
Mole: Great Adventure may be oriented toward a younger audience, but it can hold a bit of interest for adults as well, depending on whether you can get past the simple story. Hence, there’s no violence involved and everything is as colorful as possible, in order to make the players feel secure and provide them with a joyful experience as a whole.
The story talks about a cute little mole that needs to scour the forest in search of flowers, in order to use them as ingredients in the medicine for its ill mother. However, the woods are filled with not-so-friendly animals, including bears and the like, which can cause some trouble for the tiny mole. The obvious solution is to stun them, by jumping on top of their heads a couple of times.
In order to pass the levels, you must collect all the flowers in it, which is no easy task. Some of the flowers are behind locked doors, so you need to find the keys and go back to unlock them. It is also possible to collect various gems, which reward you with points. Whenever you manage to hit 10,000 points, you are awarded an extra life, so it’s a good deal no matter what, especially since the gems are everywhere.
Graphics-wise, the game doesn’t look too bad, but don’t expect anything great either. The textures and the objects are pretty detailed, but the levels are quite repetitive and not very open to exploration. Thankfully, there are multiple themes you get to visit along the way, including winter and autumn, both of which come with a different collection of enemies as well.
All things considered, Mole: Great Adventure was obviously designed for small children and casual gamers, so it doesn’t hold under scrutiny when it comes to gameplay and other such mature things. However, that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy it either, regardless of whether you are a hardcore gamer or not.
