Magic has taken many shapes over the course of history, starting with shamanic rituals back in the day, all the way to supposed wizards and witches closer to our time. However, books and video games contributed a lot to the subject, since the fantasy genre is full of references to various spells and magic powers. Even so, there’s still plenty of room innovate, at least if you’ve got a creative mind.
Moira is an action platformer with role-playing elements, in which you play as a young boy by the name of Rubick. Rubick is an apprentice wizard, and his special power is that he can mimic the enemy’s spells and special attacks. The gameplay revolves around combat and exploration, although it’s also fun to experiment with spell combinations to see what else you can obtain.
The story is not very complex, but it is interesting enough to keep you invested in the action. As such, Rubick’s master has gone missing, and it is his job to go looking for him. Obviously, the way is paved with all sorts of dangerous foes and traps, so the journey is certainly not going to be easy. You also meet a few friends along the way, some of which may even lend you a helping hand.
The core gameplay mechanics are all about the way you make use of the mimic ability, because it’s impossible to finish the game without getting acquainted with it. Hence, you have to try all sorts of skill combinations and see which work best, especially when certain enemies are immune to your attacks. It’s also a good idea to move and react quickly, because it’s not always enough to combine spells.
As far as the graphics are concerned, they certainly look retro, but there’s a huge amount of detail in the environment. The spell animations are nice as well, and most sprites are quite smooth and pleasant. On top of it all, you can change between a variety of color themes with the press of a button, which means that you’ll never get bored of seeing the same thing over and over again.
In the end, Moira features very interesting gameplay mechanics and great visual design, not to mention the rewarding platforming sections. Hence, it should be quite the adventure for retro gaming lovers out there.
