It’s not easy to create a compelling story and a memorable set of characters to participate in it, otherwise everyone would be able to do it and we probably wouldn’t enjoy movies and books so much. However, it certainly doesn’t need to be perfect in order to be enjoyable, because people can learn to deal with flaws and appreciate the effort behind them.

Moebius: Empire Rising is a point-and-click adventure game that features the classic elements of the genre, coated in a slightly more modern interface and approach to the subject. However, the underlying principles are mostly the same, in the sense that you still have to solve various puzzles by combining objects, talking to people, and figuring out how to gain access to certain locations.

The story revolves around Malachi Rector, a sort of detective who works as an expert in antiquities and possesses the unique ability to read people by simply paying close attention to minute details. As it happens, he gets involved in a global conspiracy and the events in the game lead him closer and closer to the truth. Granted, even if the story is written by the same Jane Jensen, who’s famous for titles like Gray Matter and Gabriel Knight, the plot doesn’t click and it gets a tad ridiculous after a while.

As mentioned before, Malachi is able to tell certain things about people, which turns each person you meet in the game into a puzzle. The mechanic for this mini-games are quite interesting as an idea, but they are badly implemented, and it’s just frustrating to keep guessing what the writers were thinking about when they wrote the stuff. Most puzzles are downright pathetic and way too forced to be any fun.

Lastly, the technical presentation lacks refinement as well, because although the voice acting gets a pass most of the time, the graphics are not what you would expect this day and age. Obviously, the static backgrounds are quite artsy, but the character and the animations in particular are just horrible, which distracts you from the gameplay.

In the end, Moebius: Empire Rising can still be considered mediocre if you are feeling kind, but any fan of the genre is going to be disappointed with the puzzles and the story. Hence, unless you are prepared to deal with some major flaws and inconveniences, you’d better stick with something else.
