Miner Wars 2081 is a space sim developed by Keen Software House that challenges players to survive in a devastated solar system.
The developers from Keen Software House are saying that Miner Wars 2081 is a 6DOF action-survival space-shooter simulation-game, and that’s as good of a definition as any. You might be wondering what’s that 6DOF stamped in front. It’s from six degrees of freedom, although it’s a little bit redundant since Miner Wars 2081 is also a space sim and that means that you can probably already go anywhere you want to.
Since space sims are pretty rare, you would think that it would be easy for this game to fill in a gap. It would have been easy just to provide what the gamers have been asking for so long, but that’s not the case with Miner Wars 2081. Sure, there are some interesting and familiar aspects in the game, but it doesn’t do most of the things right.
The game is using an a Voxel game engine named VRAGE. Voxels can be considered 3D pixels, but that’s a rough description. In any case, it’s a technology that’s been around for many years, but it never caught on. On the other hand, the Voxel technology didn’t die either.
Players take control on a mining ship in the year 2081 after all the planetary bodies in the solar system have been destroyed. There are a ton of things that can be done, including gathering supplies like fuel, ammunition, weapons, and much more.
For the most part, it plays just the way you imagine, meaning that that the ship can move in all directions with the same speed. In closed quarters, it feels like a Descent title.
Even if Miner Wars 2081 has been in the works for a long time, the engine is poorly optimized, and it has problems with the framerate, which is annoying, to say the least. Also, the developers also say that it features fully destructible environment, but that’s not entirely true. It works only for certain objects and surfaces.
Miner Wars 2081 would be a decent game if not for the framerate issues.
