Dungeons are a classic part of video games, especially in RPGs or adventure games. Unfortunately, dark corridors tend to become repetitive after a while, regardless of what monsters you encounter along the way and how much treasure there is. Even so, the formula can be improved and changed in many ways, which is why there are still many dungeon crawlers released even today.

Maze Lord is not exactly a dungeon crawler, but it does feature interesting gameplay mechanics, as well as an emphasis on puzzles instead. Thus, the main goal is to find your way out of mazes in as few moves as possible, while also defeating enemies and collecting various power-ups to help you along. It’s a fairly simple formula, but it works surprisingly well if you are not expecting too much depth.

To begin with, each stage is different than the last, and the levels also get more difficult later on. Although the first ones are quite straightforward, the difficulty level increases slowly as you make your way deeper and deeper into the dungeon, with more enemies making an appearance. It’s also worth noting that you have a limited number of moves at your disposal to get out of each stage, so proper planning is needed.

Your character has a limited number of health points, and the encounters usually cause you to lose at least one point. Naturally, the game is over if you run out of health, so it’s important to calculate a move so that doesn’t happen. There are also health potions you can pick up along the way, as well as a few other helpful things, such as keys to unlock doors and so on.

The whole thing gets fairly addictive after a while, mainly because it’s fun to put your theories into practice and reset the levels whenever you make mistakes. The graphics are quite nice and colorful, even if the tiles get rather repetitive after a while, since there are no new environments to discover. The soundtrack is nothing to write home about, but it goes nicely in the background.

Maze Lord is a very fun and addictive puzzle game, in spite of the simple gameplay mechanics it features. There are plenty of levels to keep you busy for quite some time, especially since they get more difficult to solve later on.
