Masochisia

So… have you ever wondered how it’s like to be a psychopath? Or, have you ever wanted a game that shows how you, as a psychopath, see the world? Because that’s what Masochisia is, a daunting depiction of what goes on in the mind of a paranoid child who lives a life of abuse and horrors that slowly deplete him of his humanity.

First and foremost, Masochisia is a game with strong language, the kind that’s both in your face shocking and full of unsettling subtleties. Domestic violence and depictions of inhuman behaviour are also present in the game so before you play this, if you do, expect a sensitive subject with a disturbingly realistic way of presenting a harsh reality.

Masochisia is still a game and should be looked at as such. You play as a boy of an unknown age who lives a life of torment, abuse, in total paranoia. A few minutes in you meet your strange and obviously psychotic mother and after that, your drunk father who looks at you like you’re an abomination, the embodiment of pure evil, he only feels disgust for you.

Masochisia really slaps you in the face with a lot and, albeit not the best thing to say, its script, the dialogue, is excellently written.

Masochisia is a beautiful game despite the not so pleasant topic and story. The graphics, the effects and the side-scrolling mechanic used for exploration add plenty to the atmosphere of the game. Visually, the game deserves a decent amount of appreciation although it could be a lot darker, and it probably will be when it’s finished.

Don’t think of this one like that kind of point and click with puzzles to solve, Masochisia is all about the story and how it can get to you. It surrounds you with the horrors that take over a child’s mind and the cruelty that unfolds in his life, it pulls you into the strange and borderline sadistic world.

Masochisia is a touching and disturbing game. It will raise a lot of questions about the reality with which some people are faced as well as that which others fabricate in their broken minds. It is something you need to be careful with, it really isn’t for those with a young heart or a weak mind. Pay attention to the WARNING screen at the start of the game, read it well.
