Magnetis is a puzzle game that reminds us of the Tetris concept, but it managed to stay clear of anything that could be interpreted as copying.

It’s nice to see that developers sometimes find ways of dealing with problems like copyright. Some ideas are too good to pass, and Tetris certainly did a lot of good things. Unfortunately, the people who own the Tetris trademark are watching their property like a hawk, and they came down with the hammer and anyone who does even something remotely similar.

As for Magnetis, some users might notice some familiar elements, like pieces falling from above and rearrangement in mid-air, but that’s about the end of similarities. The game is different enough so that it doesn’t infringe the Tetris trademark while still providing some nice gameplay and a new game.

The idea is pretty simple in Magnetis. As the name suggests, this is about magnets. Since all the magnets have two poles and opposite poles attract, the player only has to make sure that he points them in the right direction.

Magnets of various lengths come down and players can change their position, but only on the horizontal. In order to score points and take pieces off the screen, players need to make sure that two different magnets are placed opposite to each other. They will go away, along with all the pieces between them.

As you can imagine, the more pieces you get in between the magnets, the more points you’re going to get. Fortunately, not only magnets are falling, and other inert pieces will arrive to fill in the blacks.

Since it’s not possible to move them on the vertical axis, it’s rather difficult to fit them anything you want to. Also, from time to time, the player advances in level and the speed increases. You can start to see the problem.

Magnetis is not a terribly handsome game, but it doesn’t really needs to be. It has a simple concept and simple graphics, so at the end of the day, it only matters if it was fun. It's only mildly entertaining.
