Motocross races can be pretty exciting, especially since the soft terrain and the relatively low speeds allow the riders to engage in daring practices. On the other hand, it’s not the most popular sport out there, which means that there are not many video game simulators to choose from. Thankfully, Milestone is here to save the day once again, this time with a sequel to one of their popular bike sims.
MXGP2 - The Official Motocross Videogame is a racing simulator featuring realistic physics and improved gameplay, plus a variety of other additions designed to keep the players engaged over long periods of time. It’s competitive, pretty and challenging enough to be worth the climb on the learning curve, which is pretty steep. On the other hand, the difficulty can be reduced a bit, although realism suffers as well.
As always, the game features all the official bikes, sponsors and riders of the competition, which should be great news for the fans. You can also choose between a variety of bike parts and upgrade your ride in the career mode, and all the big names in the industry are available. On top of that, you can also create your own teams and compete with the giants as an underdog.
Not everything is perfect, on the other hand. While the gameplay has been improved in certain regards, such as the fact that you have much more control over the bike and its components, there are still some annoyances you’ll have to live with. One of the most irritating is the fact that you are instantly reset if you step even one foot outside the track. It really breaks up the gameplay in the beginning when you are trying to learn, and it also hurts the overall realism.
As for the graphics, everything is much better than in the previous iteration in the franchise, and you can tell that the designers worked a lot on every bike in the game. The tracks are very detailed as well, but the focus was clearly on the bikes. On top of that, you don’t need an excessively powerful computer to run the game either, which is definitely a plus.
In the end, MXGP2 - The Official Motocross Videogame has its flaws, but the overall game is more than decent, and it should please the fans of the genre. It also features a lot of content and a great graphics engine to render everything as close to reality as possible.
