Sometimes, weird ideas can be the source of critically-acclaimed books, movies, or even video games, depending on how good the execution is. Hence, even if you make use of some unusual elements to tell an interesting story, people will listen to what you have to say and disregard the weird part as they manage to get used to the overall idea over time.

Luckless Seven plays and feels very strange at first, mainly because you can’t quite tell if it’s serious or not. Hence, everything seems to be taking place in a modern and somewhat futuristic environment, with people going about their daily lives and jobs. However, they also enjoy playing an unusual card game as a way to socialize with each other, called simple Ekosi.

After a few rounds, the Star Wars fans might notice that the game takes many of its ideas from Pazaak, the similar version seen in one of the movies. However, even if you are not familiar with the Star Wars franchise, you can still compare this to blackjack, because they are very similar. As such, you have to get as close to 20 as possible, without going over. The difference is that you also get a few cards of your own to play with, which can be used to add or subtract a certain number of points.

The role-playing part of the game is a bit less obvious at first, but you get to appreciate it if you start exploring a bit. The world is quite large and there are many NPCs to interact with, although not all of them have something to say to you. However, when they do want to talk, the dialog tree is quite expansive and you can influence your character’s growth by choosing the desired answers and questions.

Although you have to deal with an isometric point of view, the graphics engine is not at all bad, especially since the level designers put a lot of work into the environments. Hence, every corner of the world has been carefully designed to be as attractive as possible, although you obviously stumble into repetition every once in a while. The same goes for the sound, which is not yet incredible, but it gets the job done.

In the end, Luckless Seven is certainly a breath of fresh air in the industry and it can certainly be something to keep an eye on, given the fact that it’s still in the development phase. However, there’s plenty of work to be done, because the game does not feel very lively yet, probably because the environments are a tad too restrained and empty.
