EverQuest was one of the earliest and most popular MMORPGs out there, with a strong fan base spanning to this day. Even Blizzard’s giant, World of Warcraft, took its inspiration from EverQuest while all the other MMOs after that copied it and so on. However, while WarCraft started as an RTS, EverQuest made the move in reverse and a strategy game was released a few years after the online game was already out on the market.
Lords of EverQuest is an attempt to challenge the WarCraft III colossus and provide the gamers with an alternative in the genre, although the games themselves are very different once you get to check them out properly. However, it is clear that the game at hand is not a jewel and it only came out as an attempt to squeeze some money out of the franchise and somehow feed off Blizzard’s product at the same time.
To begin with, there are three races you can choose from, each one of which is unique in its own way, but not very much so. Sure, the units and the buildings are different, but there’s nothing to really make them stand out from each other, or any mechanics that force you to completely change the way you have to approach each faction. Instead, they all just look a bit different while the underlying principles are the same.
Even so, these problems do not matter all that much in the campaign mode, because you only play with one race at the time. There are plenty of missions to tackle and they get increasingly more difficult as you advance through them. One aspect that might interest you, on the other hand, is the fact that each unit has the ability to level up as it survives the battles, which in turn makes them more useful and powerful, as long as you take care of them.
Not only that, but there are actual heroes as well, which are obviously more powerful and they come with a larger assortment of skills they can use. Items can also be picked up and equipped, in order to provide your troops with better protection against damage. The graphics engine is nice enough to properly display the units and the environments, but it’s a step behind WarCraft III in this regard, especially when it comes to animations.
Lords of EverQuest is indeed rather unpolished and hardly innovative when it comes to gameplay, but it does have a few good points here and there. Hence, if you are a fan of the EverQuest lore, this can be a good way to expand your knowledge and try something different.
